Brasil Origem Week, the new face of Brazil: artists and visual expressions

photographer Daryan Dornelles and artist Helô Plantier at WOW, in Vila Nova de Gaia

From April 24 to 27, Brasil Origem Week invites the Portuguese public to immerse themselves in a sensorial and aesthetic experience with the exhibition of two names that reflect the plurality and strength of Brazilian art: photographer Daryan Dornelles and painter Helô Plantier.

The event, which takes place at WOW, in Vila Nova de Gaia, is known for celebrating Brazil’s cultural diversity through gastronomy, fashion, music and art. In this edition, the program gains even more density with visual works that challenge stereotypes and propose new readings on contemporary Brazilian identity.

Daryan Dornelles, a reference in Brazilian photography, presents the exhibition “A look at a Brazilian passion”, a sensitive and powerful essay on football as a cultural, political and social expression. The photographer has collaborated with magazines such as Rolling Stone and participated in international exhibitions. The work that will be shown at WOW translates football beyond the field, as an aesthetic language and collective memory.

“For me, football has always been more than just a game. It is a reflection of Brazil. The passion in the stands, the gestures, the silences, all of this tells a story about who we are. This exhibition is an invitation to take a deeper look at this cultural phenomenon that crosses classes, territories and emotions,” says Daryan Dornelles.

Helô Plantier, known for her vibrant use of colours and organic lines, brings a selection of works that discuss themes such as ancestry, nature and Brazilianness. The artist works with diverse media and has been gaining space among the new voices of contemporary Brazilian art, proposing an intimate and poetic look at the depths of Brazil. The artist will present the exhibition “More Bossa, please”.

“All artists go through different periods in their careers, and I experienced one of those moments very intensely, surrounded by strong women and the vibrant energy of figures like Fridas, as well as phrases that deeply penetrated me. However, something in me changed. At the end of 2024 and the beginning of 2025, I took a trip that unexpectedly touched me. At first, I thought it was the winds of Bahia, the heat of the Northeast or the bright colours of Brazil that impacted me. Later, I understood that it was about love: the affection I received, the way I was welcomed, the encounters and reunions I experienced. Brazil embraced me, and I long to express all of this through art,” explains Helô.

Entry to the Brasil Origem Week is free, and visits to the exhibitions can be made during the four days of the festival.
