Bubaque Festival with an online alternative due to COVID-19

Guinea-Bissau’s Biggest Festival has been canceled due to the New Coronavirus pandemic, but it will have an online alternative.

The Bubaque Festival was founded in 2009 by Nicolau Gomes da Cruz Almeida, where for the first time, the island of Bubaque embraced the biggest cultural event in Guinea-Bissau which was attended by all renowned artists.

The Festival was created with the aim of boosting Guinean culture, making the gastronomy, music, artists, and biodiversity known.

From 2009 until today, many internationally renowned artists and bands have passed by, for example, Justino Delgado, Dulce Neves, Tito Paris, Inaida Marta, Carina Gomes, Don Kikas, Juka of São Tomé and Principe, José Manuel Fortes, Sidónio Paz, Manecas Costa, Binham Quimor, Tino Trimo, Banda Mamadjombo, Banda Tabanca Djaz, Banda Gil Semedo from Cape Verde, and many other national artists of great importance.

The biggest sponsor of this festival is the Government of Guinea-Bissau through the Ministry of Culture and Sport, and today, this Festival is considered the biggest Festival in Guinea-Bissau.

This year due to the pandemic crisis of COVID-19, the festival’s organization made the decision to cancel this year’s edition to avoid spreading the virus to artists, festival-goers and everyone involved.

The festival, which was to take place between Friday and Sunday on the island of Bubaque, will be replaced by live performances by musicians on social media on Saturday to cheer up Guineans in social isolation.

The new coronavirus, responsible for the covid-19 pandemic, has already infected more than 1.3 million people worldwide, of whom more than 73,000 died.
