Calíope live at the Convent of S. Francisco, in Coimbra

March 7th

Calíope – Artistic Creation and Awareness Project on Gender Equality, will perform live on March 7, 2025, at 9:30 pm, at the Convento de S. Francisco, in Coimbra

There’s A Garota Não, Elisa Rodrigues, Joana Espadinha, Marta Hugon and the Coro das Mulheres da Fábrica (an intergenerational women’s collective from Coimbra, which sings the tradition of popular female polyphony). This is a benefit concert for AKTO, an association that supports young women in vulnerable situations.

The artistic direction will be in charge of Marta Hugon and the musical direction will be by Luís Figueiredo, who will also provide the piano and keyboards. The participating musicians will be Ana Isabel Dias on the Harp, Sofia Queiroz on the Double Bass, Maria Fonseca on the Trumpet and André Sousa Machado on the Drums.

On the day of the concert, the singer-songwriters and the Akto Association will be present at two schools in the city of Coimbra, to talk about the themes of gender equality, human rights and democracy, complementing the show with an important educational aspect.

The main objective of the Calíope Project is to transform the public’s perception of the role of women in the music industry, giving visibility to a group of authors/composers from different areas of music and with very diverse followers, who give voice to their compositions and which embody the possibility of creating and controlling one’s artistic career. Giving them a platform – literally and figuratively – to bring to the table the numbers of inequality, and issues related to remuneration and copyright, giving examples of resilience, success and the ability to change the artistic scene in our country. Taking as a starting point the power of myths as narratives that span time and condition society and individuals, this project aims to transform the myth of the inspiring muse into a new Myth, that of the Creative Muse, identified here as Calíope.

80% of the box office proceeds will go to Akto (a non-profit association defending Human Rights and Democracy).

The concert will also have the support of CIG – Commission for Citizenship and Gender Equality, and Coimbra City Council.
