European champions were eliminated in the round of 16 of the competition

Francisco Ordonhas concluded his participation in the World Surf League (WSL) Junior World Championship this Thursday in 9th place, after being eliminated in the round of 16 of the event being held in Urbiztondo Beach, in the Philippines.

Ordonhas, 19, had finished second in the opening round heat, which forced him to compete in a repechage round. Against Australian Marlon Harrison, the current European junior champion did not waver and achieved a solid victory, which guaranteed his presence in the round of 16.

In heat 4, Ordonhas scored 13.90 points, standing out with a wave in the house of excellence, of 8.33 points. A performance that left the experienced opponent without any reaction, finishing the dispute with just 8.80 points.

With the competition progressing at a good pace, the surfer from Cascais returned to the water in the final heat of the day this Thursday, where he faced the Spaniard Kai Odriozola, who had been the winner of the heat that they both competed in the opening round.

Ordonhas even stood in front of the heat for several minutes, controlling the operations. However, in the final stretch of the competition, Odriozola found the best wave of the heat under the Portuguese’s priority and achieved a score of 8.17 points.

Francisco Ordonhas still tried to respond in the last wave, but ended up with only 12.36 points, against the 13.64 points of the Basque surfer. An outcome that led to the elimination of Ordonhas, who left the Philippines in 9th place.

This was the return of a Portuguese surfer to the Junior World Championship after KIka Veselko won the junior women’s world title in California in 2023. Before that, in 2014, in Ericeira, Vasco Ribeiro had been the first national surfer to secure the world title of the category.
