Cantadeira lança “Senhora das Flores”

CANTADEIRA, a singer-songwriter with a musical career linked to the music of Portuguese oral tradition, returns to publishing with her new single “Senhora das Flores”, which anticipates a new album to be released on May 10th.

CANTADEIRA is a woman, mother, singer, bagpiper, “adufeira” and seeks inspiration from the women of the past and today, our mothers, aunts and grandmothers who with their voices rocked us, welcomed us, raised us and left us their strong feminine legacy and emotional. A musical project where the voice is the guiding thread for ancestral and current soundscapes.

For much of her life, the artist sang traditional songs about the Ladies of the oral musical tradition: “Senhora do Leite”, “Senhora da Azenha”, “Virgem da Consolação”; “Senhora do almortão”, “Senhora do Bom Sucesso” and many others. These local saints and ancient deities are part of popular religiosity and are comfort and healing for those who evoke them. It is in this imaginary that their lady is born, the ” Lady of Flowers”.

“I can say that my scepticism or cynicism has been invaded by a great dose of magic when singing the “ladies”. That’s why I wanted to write about my search. The search for my lady, for my faith, trying to understand where my healing. I also wanted to show that women have always been seen by society through a religious matrix, even if we don’t know it consciously. This matrix has made us see women as sometimes Virgins, sometimes Magdalenes, sometimes pure, and sometimes true manipulative salomes. But I want to believe that it is possible to open your eyes and see what lies between these two poles”, says A CANTADEIRA.

The music video for “Senhora das Flores” is now available and is directed by Vasco Ribeiro Casais and Joana Negrão who, to match the song, looked for the various representations of Women in the most iconic painting in the History of Art. From the Magdalene and Salome to religious and pagan representations, to the goddesses of antiquity and the witches persecuted by the Inquisition.

This single anticipates the release of a full-length album that will be released on May 10th.

Joana Negrão materialized this work in projects such as Dazkarieh and Seiva and is now launching solo with A Cantadeira. She keeps, in summary, everything she has done to date, but using only her voice recorded in several layers and traditional percussion instruments, such as the Adufe, the Pandeireta and also the Portuguese Bagpipes.
