Sing Dornelas
Dornelas do Zêzere and Vânia Couto are rescuing memories for the future, through the traditional songbook
During this week, Dornelas do Zêzere is rescuing memories for the future, through the traditional songbook, with the help of Vânia Couto.
The village of Dornelas do Zêzere has been hosting, since September 17, the singer, songwriter, and cultural promoter Vânia Couto, known for her participation in projects such as Pensão Flor and, more recently, as the founder of the Women’s Choir of the Factory, a choir of women from the Centro Region that reinterprets the Portuguese and World Popular Songbook, composed of over 100 women.
This initiative called Sing Dornelas, is aimed at the inhabitants of the parish of Dornelas do Zêzere, a village in the municipality of Pampilhosa da Serra, and results from the partnership of the local government with the Cultural Association Jazz ao Centro Clube (JACC), which has been developing work in the region, in projects such as XJazz – Jazz Meetings in the Schist Villages.
The participants in this project will share stories and songs with Vânia Couto in which the centrality of the river that the village overlooks, as well as the past (and present) umbilical connection to the land and the mines, are naturally highlighted. It will be the result of these shares that they will present, at an open moment for the entire community, in a concert that will take place at 3:30 PM on Saturday, September 21.
Sing Dornelas also results from the desire to continue, in the socio-cultural domain, the principles established by the Network of Villages for the Future – Bauhaus EUROACE Villages, constituted from the initiative of the Municipality of Pampilhosa da Serra. It is, therefore, a matter of developing actions in the territory, promoting an interdisciplinary movement that combines tradition and innovation, sustainability, and involvement of the communities in a territory that encompasses six villages of the Euroregion EUROACE: the villages of Dornelas do Zêzere in Pampilhosa da Serra and Sortelha in Sabugal, from the Center region of Portugal; São Pedro do Corval in Reguengos de Monsaraz and Marco in Arronches, from Alentejo; and Moraleja and Llerena from Extremadura.
Co-financed by the Ministry of Culture/DGArtes, under the artistic program of JACC, Sing Dornelas counts on the support of the Pampilhosa Municipal Chamber and the local support of the Social Solidarity Association of Dornelas do Zêzere and the Parish Council.
