Come and visit Funchal, the capital of the archipelago of Madeira
Located in a bay bathed by the Atlantic Ocean, on the south coast of the island of Madeira, Funchal is the capital of the archipelago of Madeira. A city of about 600 years old, since August 21, 1508, Funchal owes its name to a wild herb with a sweet smell, the “Foeniculum Vulgare”, traditionally known as fennel, which existed abundantly at the time of its settlement.
Funchal is the largest tourist, commercial and cultural center in the entire archipelago of Madeira. The city offers a wide range of leisure activities, from visits to its museums, churches and other monuments, walks in its fantastic gardens, at the Marina of Funchal with the color of its boats, shopping and nightlife to bars and clubs.
In the form of an amphitheater, the municipality of Funchal extends over a long slope, from sea level to Pico do Areeiro, at 1818 m altitude.
