Capicua performs at the 2021 José Afonso Prize ceremony

Cineteatro D. João V, at Damaia

Capicua will perform on the 22nd of April, at 9 pm, at the Cineteatro D. João V, in Damaia (Amadora), as part of the commemorative program for the 49th anniversary of the 25th of April. On this occasion, the José Afonso Prize 2021 ceremony will also take place, which was unanimously awarded by the jury to the artist’s most recent album – “Madrepérola“.

About the winning album, the jury considers that this “is yet another proof of the current critical commitment of the artist, author and performer Capicua, emphasizing, in particular, the quality of the lyrics, the emotional interpretation and the careful production of the album, which comes crown an already significant career and increasingly recognized for its musical and social importance”.

The José Afonso Award has been promoted by the Municipality of Amadora since 1988 and aims to honor the Portuguese singer and composer José Afonso and encourage musical creation with Portuguese roots, by rewarding an unpublished album, released in the year prior to the edition of the prize, whose theme has Portuguese culture and history as reference.

To receive this award and celebrate April, Capicua returns to the stage with a concert that is dedicated, above all, to the repertoire of the album “Madrepérola“, in which some excerpts from the book “Aquário” (released in August 2022) will also be mixed. This will be the first concert of a reduced number of dates, in special events, that Capicua will perform in 2023.

ABOUT THE MADREPÉROLA ALBUM
The singles “Madrepérola” ft. Karol Conka, “Último Mergulho” ft. Lena d’Água, “Planetário” ft. Mallu Magalhães and “Passiflora” ft. Camané were some of the gems revealed from the new CAPICUA work, “MADREPÉROLA”, before its physical and digital editions.

The album is filled with surprising collaborations that expand on the unique universe of CAPICUA. In addition to the names already mentioned, it also has the participation of Catarina Salinas, singing verses by Sophia de Mello Breyner Andressen in “A Minha Ilha”, with the actor Pedro Lamares in “Cartas a Jovens Poetas” and with the fado singer Ricardo Ribeiro in the theme “The Perfect Square”.

CAPUCUA once again joins forces with Emicida and Rael (partners on “Língua Franca”) for the last song on the album – “Mátria” which also features rapper Rincon Sapiência.

And to celebrate, once again, its admiration for Sérgio Godinho, CAPICUA rescues the theme “Parto Sem Dor” (from the 1979 album “Campolide”), to transform it into a humming chorus, which accompanies emotional lyrics about motherhood.

Ride, Stereossauro, Virtus, Minus, Pedro Geraldes, Holly, D-One, Branko, and PEDRO are the beatmakers responsible for the instrumentals of “Madrepérola”.

“The album is called ‘Madrepérola’ in a clear allusion to motherhood, as it was recorded during and after pregnancy and was itself a long gestation process. Like birth, it is an album of overcoming and rebirth. ‘Happy oysters don’t make pearls’ is the phrase (by Rubem Alves, Brazilian author, and thinker) that opens the album and its first homonymous single, precisely because oysters only make pearls when they have a grain of sand bothering them. They cover the grain of sand with a drool and end up making a pearl, a perfect metaphor for this management of life’s discomforts and their sublimation into art and love. Music and motherhood are as much about beauty and selflessness as they are about discomfort and overcoming. It is no coincidence that the idea of ‘creation’ serves art and children, and this record speaks to all of that.”
