Caretos of Podence are UNESCO Intangible World Heritage Site

The Caretos of Podence were today declared Intangible Cultural Heritage of Humanity by UNESCO.

The decision was announced at the General Assembly of the Convention for the Safeguarding of Intangible Cultural Heritage, which runs until Saturday in Bogota, Colombia.

The traditional masks of the Entrudo Chocalheiro from the village of Macedo de Cavaleiros in the Transmontano municipality are now part of a world list where Portugal already has Fado, Cante Alentejano, the Mediterranean Diet, Falconry and the so-called ‘Estremoz Dolls’.

The ‘Podence Carnival Winter Parties’ were the only candidacy selected by the Portuguese Government to represent Portugal at this 14th meeting of the International Committee of UNESCO, the United Nations body for Science, Culture and Education.
