A hundred caricatures about pianist Maria João Pires will be on display at Teatro Constantino Nery, Matosinhos, starting today, September 17th.
This is the Special Caricature Award at the 23rd PortoCartoon World Festival, which, in addition to the pianist, included Martin Luther King.
Organized by the Museu Nacional da Imprensa, the exhibition brings together works by caricaturists from twenty-six countries such as Argentina, Brazil, China, Colombia, Cuba, Finland, India, Indonesia, Italy, Lebanon, New Zealand, among others. The geographic latitude of the participating artists shows the international fame of the Portuguese pianist.
Internationally recognized for half a century, after winning 1st prize in the Beethoven bicentennial competition in Brussels in 1970, Maria João Pires is currently the most expressive figure in Portuguese music in the world. She continues to play concerts. She is at the peak of her career. She performs on the most important stages in the world.
Her career includes numerous tours, performing works by Bach, Beethoven, Schumann, Schubert, Mozart, Brahms, Chopin and many other composers. Invited by the great world orchestras, Maria João Pires performs regularly in Europe, Canada, Japan, Israel and the USA.
“Magic, captivating and profoundly poetic” – is his way of playing the piano, in the description of the most important classical music publisher in the world, ‘Deutsche Grammophon‘ (1898) which has recorded special editions with the Portuguese pianist.
The exhibition, curated by the director of the Museum, Luiz Humberto Marcos, is part of a partnership between the Museu Nacional da Imprensa and the Municipal Chamber of Matosinhos, and will run until October 31st.
