Musicians challenged seven pairs of artists to share their creative processes, crossing genres and promoting interculturality. The first episode, with Carolina Deslandes and Dino d’Santiago, premieres today, June 24th.
“Drink a Coffee, Write a Chorus” is the name of the most recent project developed by Carlão, who invited seven pairs of artists to have a coffee and share their creative processes around the construction of a chorus, the cornerstone of songs. The result of these creative meetings gave rise to seven videos, which will be released weekly, from June 24th to August 5th, on the website of Rádio Comercial, the media partner of this project.
Each episode of “Drink a Coffee, Write a Chorus” captures and follows a day of work, sharing and socializing between a composer and a singer/author. invited by Carlo.
The premise of the meeting is the development of a chorus from a musical base previously conceived by the composer. The creator and host of the project – Carlão – receives, first in a cafe and then in his studio, the pair from each session and, after a first audition of the musical basis, the proposed challenge is to use in the lyrics three words randomly taken from a book, chosen by himself to think about the specific personality of each of the authors of the lyrics.
Mixing genres and combining creative approaches, the duos paired by Carlão bring together the musical universes of some of the most interesting and inventive creators of Portuguese music:
- Carolina Deslandes + Dino D’Santiago
- Benjamin + Antonio Zambujo
- Tó Trips + Mayra Andrade
- Peter + Virgul
- Beatbombers + Tatanka
- Joao Nobre + Capicua
- Branko + Luisa Sobral
The project is a cultural program, but also playful, where different methods of work and interaction between artists who may not even know each other are informally revealed, showing the general public the dynamics of the creative process. More than the final result, the objective is to show the processes of the various composers, producers, singers, and lyricists, through the monitoring of the work in progress, “in loco“, in the studio.
For Carlão, “this is a project that aims to create an open space for debate and exchange in a gathering mode, creating bridges between interpreters of parallel genres who often just need a push to cross their paths, thus promoting interculturality.”
“Drink a Coffee, Write a Chorus” is an initiative co-financed by the European Union through the European Regional Development Fund (Cohesion Fund, European Social Fund, European Structural, and Investment Funds), within the framework of COMPETE 2020 (Operational Program for Competitiveness and Internationalization)
