Carlão returns with the release of the new single “Oh Nha Nené” (“Oh my Nené“), available from today, April 11th.
This special release, part of a double single that includes the song “Na Loucura“, celebrates the artist’s Cape Verdean roots and pays a moving tribute to his mother, affectionately known as “Nené“, on her birthday. This is the first preview of Carlão’s next album of new songs, scheduled for release later this year, following Entretenimento, released in 2018.
“‘Oh Nha Nené’ is a theme for my mother. Nené has been her nickname since she was a little girl, in Cape Verde, and to this day some friends and family call her that”, explains Carlão. The deeply intimate and personal song has lyrics by the artist himself and music in collaboration with Stereossauro. “It speaks to her attitude towards life and her children – specifically me – when it comes to the love that she has always given me, and that has always come first over anything else.”
The theme addresses maternal love, reflection on personal trajectory and the strength of family legacy. Carlão transparently exposes deep emotions, regrets and gratitude for his mother’s unconditional support, in a poem sung in Portuguese and Cape Verdean Creole. “This love entered me, it is part of me. Today I feel this about my daughters – I have always passed this love on to them, I have always verbalized it. It is part of my life.”
Stereossauro’s musical base, marked by Cape Verdean identity, was decisive in bringing the lyrics to life: “I had already tried these lyrics on other tracks, but when I heard this beat I realized that this was where it fit. It gained a completely different dimension with this musical base.”
The music video, filmed on the island of Santo Antão, in Cape Verde, the artist’s mother’s homeland, was directed, photographed and edited by RZR. “My mother hasn’t been to Santo Antão since the 90s. I was there 20 years ago, but I hadn’t recorded anything. Now, as a father, I knew I would look at it differently. I thought it would be beautiful to go specifically to the places where she grew up, capture these images and give them to her as a gift. The video is for her.”
With a careful and authentic aesthetic, the music video presents a narrative that spans generations and highlights the artist’s emotional connection with his roots.
Produced by Stereossauro in partnership with Carlão, “Oh Nha Nené” was mixed by João Martins and mastered by Rui Dias. The release reaches the public with distribution by Universal Music Portugal.
With “Oh Nha Nené”, Carlão not only celebrates his cultural heritage but also recalls the central role of maternal figures in the construction of our personal and artistic identity, in a sincere and touching testimony about love, overcoming and the importance of valuing one’s origins.
