Carlos do Carmo honored in December at the Altice Arena
The concert in honor of Carlos do Carmo, who died on January 1 this year, “Fado é Amor” will bring together António Serrano, Agir, Camané, Carminho, Dino d’Santiago, Jorge Palma, Mariza, Marco Rodrigues, Pedro Abrunhosa, Ricardo Ribeiro and Sara Tavares, in a unique and unforgettable show.
Born in Lisbon, on December 21, 1939, Carlos do Carmo was the son of fado singer Lucília do Carmo and bookseller Alfredo Almeida, owners of the fado house O Faia, where he began to sing, until starting his artistic career in 1964.
Winner of the Latino Career Grammy, which he received in 2014, among other awards, his career has gone through the main world stages, from Olympia, in Paris, to the Frankfurt Opera, in Germany, from ‘Canecão’, in Rio de Janeiro, to Royal Albert Hall, London.
With the song “Flor de Verde Pinho”, about the homonymous poem by Manuel Alegre, he represented Portugal at the 1976 Eurovisão da Canção Festival.
In 2015, he received the highest distinction in the French capital, the Grande Médaille de Vermeil, and, in the following year, the Portuguese State awarded him the degree of Grand-Official of the Order of Merit. In 2019, he received the key to the city of Lisbon, an honor usually given to heads of state who visit Portugal.
“No Teu Poema”, “Um Homem na Cidade”, “Os Putos”, “Canoas do Tejo”, “Lisbon, Menina e Moça”, “Bairro Alto”, “Por Morrer um Andorinha”, “Fado do Campo Grande” and “Fado da Saudade”, performed in the film “Fados”, which won him a Goya Prize, in Spain, were some of his successes, recorded on dozens of records.
The fado singer’s last album “E Ainda…” was released on April 16th and, although it is a posthumous edition, it was all conceived and created in life.
