Carlos Mendes Wins Pedro Osório Prize from SPA

Delivery ceremony, January 31st, 6pm, Maestro Frederico de Freitas Auditorium

The Pedro Osório Prize (or SPAUTORES Prize) was established by the Portuguese Society of Authors in 2011, with the main objective of honouring the composer and conductor Pedro Osório.

Every year, an author and a work from any musical area are distinguished, as a way of promoting Portuguese music and its authors, as well as the memory and work of Pedro Osório. The jury that awards the prize is made up of members of SPA’s social bodies linked to the area of music.

In the current year of 2024, this prestigious award will be awarded to Carlos Mendes, for his most recent album, Viagem, in a ceremony that will take place on January 31st, at 6 pm, at the Maestro Frederico de Freitas Auditorium, at the SPA headquarters, in Lisbon.

The album Viagem constitutes a journey through the sounds and influences of an artist who gives us a set of songs and poems, where we discover the longings, passions, smiles and intimate moments, on his journey through life.

Carlos Mendes, author, composer and singer of timeless songs such as “Festa da Vida”, “Amélia dos Olhos Doces”, “Ruas de Lisboa”, “Alcácer que vier”, or “Meu Menino Povo”, has a total of 22 albums recorded, adding two victories at the Festival da Canção, respectively in 1968 with ‘Verão’ and in 1972 with ‘A Festa da Vida’.

He participated, as an author, in several television programs, having been responsible for the creation and presentation of the talk show ‘Falas Tu ou Falo Eu’, also standing out for his activity in lyrical singing, in which he has been specializing- as a singer and teacher.
