Carlos Paião will have statue in his honor in Ílhavo

The statue of homage to Carlos Paião will be placed on the Calçada do Jardim Henriqueta Maia that bears his name, within the scope of the ongoing requalification of the Urban Center of Ílhavo, in the district of Aveiro.

Composer, performer and instrumentalist, Carlos Paião lived a large part of his life in Ílhavo, his parents’ natural land, and it was at a festival of Ílhavo’s song that he began to be noticed and publicly recognized.

The sculpture, with the inscription #emplayback, will be made in bronze, 1.80 meters high and will be placed at ground level. This context will allow Carlos Paião to fit in with the requalified space, integrating him into the cultural experiences that will be developed and promoted there in the future, as well as an interaction and a very direct proximity with the people who enjoy that area, valuing and symbolizing the relationship of intimacy that the artist has always sought to maintain with his audience and fans.

The initiative, which is curated by Nuno Sacramento, reflects the public recognition of the Ílhavo City Council for the cultural role and musical weight of Carlos Paião, as part of the joint effort, developed in 2020, by the municipality and the biographer Nuno Gonçalo da Paula (author of Carlos Paião’s biography), with the purpose of marking the 40th anniversary of the release of the first album and the professionalization of his intense career, tragically interrupted after a decade.

With the new statue erecting in the center of the city, the Chamber seeks, once again, to keep alive in the collective memory the traditions, culture and people that made the name of Ílhavo and his people more prominent, in addition to to give his public recognition of this remarkable Portuguese author and artist, cherished by those who consecrated and immortalized him.
