“Carmina Burana” in May at the Tivoli BBVA Theater and Coliseu Porto AGEAS

In its absolute debut on Portuguese stages, Vortice Dance Company reinterprets the classic “Carmina Burana” by Carl Orff, between May 9th and 12th at Teatro Tivoli BBVA and on May 28th at Coliseu Porto AGEAS.
The artists on stage perform a vigorous and emotional interpretation of medieval texts that, with musical power and drama, provide the public with a unique opportunity to experience the timelessness of the work “Carmina Burana”, this time in a format that is truly innovative. immersive and transmedia.
“Carmina Burana” are a set of profane medieval poems and songs that were found in the 19th century in the monastery of Benediktbeuern, in Bavaria, Germany. In the 20th century, German composer Carl Orff adapted the texts into a scenic cantata, which was performed in 1937 at the Frankfurt Opera. Since then, compositions such as “O Fortuna”, due to the emotional power and dramatic intensity they evoke, have gained prominence in classical music and have been part of the soundtrack for films and advertisements.
In this performance, as in medieval manuscripts, all the characters are corrupted by the pleasures of the flesh and lust. This new creation, by Cláudia Martins and Rafael Carriço, Artistic Directors of Vortice Dance Company, is not only a tribute to the poems set to music by Carl Orff but also a new way of approaching the classics, through creativity and artistic excellence with a performance innovative.
Vortice Dance Company’s production thus presents, in Lisbon and Porto, a new approach to the classic “Carmina Burana”, through a show that explores the creative potential of contemporary dance, in an increasingly technological world.
