Casa da Baía opens its doors to science at the European Researchers’ Night

September 29th in a partnership between the Polytechnic and the Setúbal City Council

The Setúbal Polytechnic Institute (IPS) is counting down to the European Researchers’ Night (NEI), an initiative in partnership with the Setúbal City Council that will take place next Friday, the 29th, between 10:30 am and 10 pm, at Casa da Baía, proposing to bring science closer to the general public through interactive and playful activities.

On this return to Setúbal, what is considered the biggest science festival in Portugal and Europe adopts the theme “Building Bridges: The Dialogue between Science and Society”, transversal to the various activities planned and which also gives the title to a round table, scheduled for 5 pm, where a joint reflection is expected between speakers and the public on the importance of communicating science effectively and transferring it to society.

During the day, with a program dedicated to students from pre-school to secondary and professional education, guided visits are planned to CIRES – Centro Interpretativo do Roaz do Estuário do Sado, as well as a set of workshops that address issues as diverse as why being a scientist, the impact of science on everyday life and what to have on hand in case of an earthquake.

In the area of entrepreneurship, the IPStartUp team, the IPS business ideas incubator, will host the workshop “Our innovative city” (7:45 pm), which proposes a joint reflection on the potential that Setúbal has to offer its inhabitants and How can they contribute to making this territory grow in an innovative way?

During the evening, NEI’s proposals extend to the entire local community, with entertainment provided by IPS tunas, a guided visit to Casa da Baía, and a period of express conversations with IPS researchers, from 9:30 pm, offering an opportunity to learn, firsthand, about the motivations and paths of those who dedicate themselves, daily, to the task of producing and disseminating knowledge in areas such as Education, Health and Well-being, Sustainability and Technology and Society.

On the occasion, the ebook “SHIFT & Inspire: Tourism & Hospitality Trends” will also be launched, one of the results of the SHIFT project, an investigation in the area of tourism marketing led by IPS and which has been running since January 2022. The session, scheduled for 7:20 pm, will be a way to provide some valuable information for those dedicated to the tourism sector, particularly regarding the sector’s major current challenges, such as sustainability, digitalization and post-pandemic consumer behaviours.

Every year, the NEI is promoted by the European Commission as a way of fostering greater proximity between scientists and the community, publicizing the research work carried out in different countries and demonstrating the impact of science, directly or indirectly, on citizens’ daily lives. Another of its objectives is to increase the interest of children and young people in science and scientific careers.

NEI has the support of several local partners, namely ENA – Energy and Environment Agency of Arrábida, S.ENERGIA – Regional Energy Agency and SMS – Municipalized Services of Setúbal.

The detailed program is now available on the IPS portal. Some of the activities require registration, which must be done on a specific form, available here.
