Casa do Esparto opens its doors in Sarnadas
This Saturday, April 29th, at 11:00 am, Casa do Esparto is inaugurated in the former Primary School of Sarnadas, parish of Alte.
Integrated in the network of workshops of the Loulé Criativo project, it is a space entirely dedicated to this art/craft, which is on the verge of extinction.
Esparto is a herbaceous plant that grows spontaneously in the Barrocal Algarve and has been used since time immemorial to produce ropes, mats, baskets, and a variety of utensils used in agriculture and fishing. In the past, it played an important role in the socio-economic life of the interior of the municipality of Loulé, but currently, it does not have a great expression in the region. Casa do Esparto appears to counteract this situation, intending to revitalize this art.
The space will function as a workplace, where it will be possible to meet the artisans, purchase their work and attend courses and workshops about this vegetable fiber.
This is an initiative of the Loulé City Council, with the support of the Parish Council of Alte.
Remember that Casa do Esparto will be the seventh Loulé Criativo workshop and the first located outside the city of Loulé, joining Casa da Empreita and the Boilers, Watchmakers, Clay, Cordophones, and Textiles.
