Paulo Pires do Vale (commissioner of the National Plan for the Arts) and Elsa Mendes (coordinator of the National Plan for Cinema) will be at the 2023 Cinema and Education Meeting, to be held on July 13, at 9:00 am, at the Ilídio Pinho Auditorium, in Catholic University in Porto.
Organized by the Center for Research in Science and Technology of the Arts (CITAR) and by the School of Arts of the Catholic University of Portugal in Porto, this event is aimed at primary and secondary school teachers and aims to present the results of the INSERT research project, which promotes film literacy in schools in northern Portugal.
“At this 2023 Film and Education Meeting we will present and discuss several ongoing film literacy projects, spread across different programs, institutions, and festivals,” says Pedro Alves, coordinator of the INSERT project and professor at the School of Arts of the Catholic University of Portugal. “The objective of the Insert project was to reduce social inequalities through the promotion of film literacy and to give more schools, teachers, and students the opportunity to come into contact with cinema”, he concludes.
“Public policies in education for the arts and cinema” is the theme of the first panel, which will feature Paulo Pires do Vale (commissioner of the National Arts Plan) and Elsa Mendes (coordinator of the National Cinema Plan). This will be followed by the presentation of the INSERT project, where Pedro Alves (project coordinator) will talk about the digital strategy of film literacy. The two round tables that follow will present “Insert Experiences” (of teachers involved in the pilot implementation of the project) and will also discuss “Education Methodologies for Cinema”. The second round table will be attended by Carlos Viana (Association Ao Norte), Irina Raimundo (Indie Júnior), Joana Canas Marques (Batalha Centro de Cinema), Paulo Fernandes (Cinanima), and Teresa Garcia (Association Os Filhos de Lumière). The event ends with a cinema session where the film “Il sogno mio d’amore” by Nathalie Mansoux and Miguel Moraes Cabral will be shown, with the presence of the director.
“Over the 18 months of the INSERT project, we designed, implemented, tested, and disseminated a theoretical-practical methodology of film literacy and cinematographic production in educational contexts,” explains Pedro Alves, adding “The resources created have already been tested in five schools in the north of Portugal and we are now prepared to disseminate them on a more global scale, both nationally and internationally.” We want it to be “a tool for everyone, inclusive and flexible so that film literacy overcomes the geographic, cultural or economic barriers that so many regions still face today.”
The INSERT project has a multidisciplinary team composed of researchers from the Center for Research in Science and Technology of the Arts (CITAR) and the Center for Studies in Human Development (CEDH) of the Faculty of Education and Psychology of the Catholic University of Portugal and is funded by the Fundação para to Science and Technology.
The 2023 Cinema and Education Meeting will take place on July 13, at the Ilídio Pinho Auditorium, at the Catholic University in Porto, and has free admission, subject to mandatory prior registration.
