Cultural celebrations with emphasis on the 50th anniversary of the 25th of April

‘Amadora em Festa’: City Hall celebrates 45 years with art, music and sport

From the 5th to the 15th of September, Amadora City Hall celebrates its 45th anniversary with a vast program of cultural, sporting and recreational initiatives, which reflect the dynamism and vitality of the first city built after the 25th of April. Music, dance and art converge in a unique environment, transforming Amadora into the centre of culture.

As part of the anniversary of the creation of the first municipality after the Carnation Revolution of 1974, ‘Amadora em Festa’ brings together, during September, a vast program of initiatives for all ages, urban art, dance and music, the sport and literature, also recalling memories of the day that marked the end of the Estado Novo.

Amadora, a city of art

The 10th edition of the ‘Conversas na Rua’ project marks the beginning of ‘Amadora em Festa’, promoting four public mural art interventions, in conjunction with heritage and the urban landscape. Visual artists, national and international, participate in this edition, including local ambassadors Odeith, Daniel Eime, Mura and the Thunders Crew collective, who aim to honour the values ​​of the 25th of April: freedom, equality and democracy.

On September 5th, the exhibition ‘Variations on a Theme’ opens. Graphic work by Maria Helena Vieira da Silva’, which brings together 54 works from the collection of engravings by the prestigious Portuguese painter at Galeria Municipal Artur Bual. From September 12th, at Espaço Delfim Guimarães, it is possible to visit ‘Amílcar Cabral – An Exhibition’ – the temporary exhibition that celebrates the legacy of one of the most notable political figures on the international scene, who encouraged popular mobilization against Portuguese colonialism. On the same day, Casa Roque Gameiro hosts the exhibition ‘All the Colors. Guida Ottolini (1915-1992). An Illustrator from the «Tribo dos Pincéis»’, which highlights the career and the various phases and styles of the illustrator from the third generation of the Roque Gameiro family.

Music and Dance fill the streets of the Municipality of Amadora

On September 7th, the streets of Amadora will be the stage for traditional Portuguese music concerts, as part of the ’45th Alentejo Day’ and the ‘7th Encontro de Concertinas’ and, to encourage the general public’s connection with music, The ‘Toca Quem Quer’ initiative will make pianos available on the 11th of September at the Amadora and Reboleira CP stations, as well as at the Amadora Este metro station, which will host not only performances by professional musicians during peak hours, but also the performances from those who dare to show their skills freely.

The Army Light Orchestra (September 11th, 6 pm, Recreios da Amadora) and the Lisbon Sinfonietta Orchestra with Coro Ricercare (September 15th, 7 pm, Palco Cidade) will also be the protagonists of unique moments of tribute to classical music.

In the year in which the 50th anniversary of the April Revolution is celebrated, Quorum Dance Company gives voice to movement, art, imagination and creativity, maximum exponents of freedom, with the show ‘VOZ’, on September 13th at the Stage da Cidade, on the same day that Rodrigo Leão presents ‘Os Portugueses’.

Carlão, one of the biggest names in urban music today, also takes to the Palco da Cidade, on the night of September 14th, in a unique show that follows the performance of the band Cara de Espelho – which brings together members of renowned Portuguese bands – Deolinda, A Naifa, Ornatos Violeta and Humanos.

Winner of the Festival da Canção (2022) and recognized multi-instrumentalist, composer and producer, the artist Maro will be honoured at the 35th edition of the José Afonso Prize, which celebrates musical creation and production in the national territory. The ceremony takes place on September 7th, at 9 pm, at Cineteatro D. João V.

Amadora on the move | A city of everyone and for everyone

The sport is still highlighted during the celebrations of the municipality’s 45th anniversary. Throughout the month, in the city’s gardens and spaces, City Hall promotes ‘Amadora Ativa’, an outdoor physical activity program, available for all ages.

Between the 4th and 8th of September, the Clube de Ténis da Amadora hosts the ‘1st Open Cidade da Amadora’, an official B-level tournament, aimed at the senior level. This event, which is part of the Portuguese Tennis Federation’s Events Calendar, includes men’s, women’s and doubles singles events, with a total monetary prize of €1,000. Registration is paid and exclusive to seniors.

Nos dias 7 e 8 de setembro, a Decathlon Amadora abre as portas à comunidade para mais uma edição do ‘VitalSport Decathlon’, um evento que convida a visitar a loja e a experimentar várias modalidades desportivas de forma gratuita e segura. Entre 14 e 15 de setembro realiza-se o ‘Torneio de Ténis Cidade da Amadora’, no Clube de Ténis da Amadora, e na manhã de 15 de setembro, o ‘ASA Classic Race’ desafia os entusiastas do cicloturismo a desfrutar de uma manhã desportiva, pedagógica e divertida.

O ‘Amadora em Festa’ conta também com a ‘Festa do Livro’, que acontece entre 13 e 15 de setembro, na Biblioteca Municipal Fernando Piteira Santos, com a participação de Ana Markl, Mariana Alvim, Rafael Gallo, M.G. Ferrey e Bruno Leão, entre vários outros autores. Nesse fim de semana, o Parque Central reúne ainda chefs nacionais e internacionais no evento gastronómico ‘Festival É UM ENCONTRO’.

Para os mais pequenos, o Espaço Fernando Relvas – Recreios da Amadora, recebe a 8 de setembro, ‘Mini Shows Infantis’ inspirados nos sucessos televisivos RUCA e Ovelha Choné.
