Center Pompidou in Paris will incorporate two works by Rui Chafes

The Pompidou Center in Paris will feature two works by Rui Chafes, which will be presented on the day the sculptor opens an exhibition with works by Alberto Giacometti at the French delegation of the Calouste Gulbenkian Foundation.

On October 1st, the sculptures ‘Invisible Meat’ and ‘Mysterious Meat’ (2013) will be presented and exhibited in the permanent collection of the Musée National d’Art Moderne in room 32, thanks to an anonymous donation that first time, works of Rui Chafes for the Pompidou.

The works had been shown in Paris in 2017 at the Galerie Mendes, under the Lusoscopy project of the Camões Institute in France, when gallerista Philippe Mendes gave the Portuguese sculptor a carte blanche to exhibit works in the midst of 16th and 18th century paintings. XVII.

Also on October 1st, the Gulbenkian in Paris will inaugurate the exhibition “Gris, Vide, Cris”, with works by Rui Chafes and Alberto Giacometti that will be open to the public from October 3 to December 16.

The exhibition aims to “provide a meeting” between the Swiss artist, who died in 1966, and the Portuguese artist, who was born in 1966, and will have 11 sculptures and four drawings by Alberto Giacometti, all sculptures by Rui Chafes – except a – been designed for this project.

“I thought there were many points of encounter, especially immaterial, between the work of Giacometti and Rui Chafes. It is an idea not of a dialogue but, above all, of providing a meeting,” said Helena de Freitas, the commissioner of the exhibition.

The project developed from a research on the lexicon common to artists, such as timelessness, dematerialization and emptiness that are concepts “that they develop in a very different material way in different times”, which can transform the project in something “bright”, according to the curator who, in 2016, commissioned the retrospective of Amadeo de Souza Cardoso at the Grand Palais in Paris.

“Let us say that there is a territory of complicity and this territory is even more immaterial than material, that is, Rui Chafes was not chosen for doing works similar to those of Giacometti because in fact it is even possible to think, in terms of accomplishment material, in situations of contrast, “continued Helena de Freitas.

In his book “The Silence of?” (1998), Rui Chafes wrote that “along with Joseph Beuys, A. Giacometti is perhaps the great post-war sculptor” who took “the path of denial, reduction, austerity and asceticism” and created “a space calcined, “paving the way for” modern sculpture: the sculpture of consciousness. ”

Born in Lisbon, Rui Chafes studied sculpture at the Faculty of Fine Arts in Lisbon between 1984 and 1989 and studied at the Kunstakademie Düsseldorf from 1990 to 1992 with Gerhard Merz and was awarded the Pessoa Prize in 2015 , and the Robert-Jacobsen Sculpture Prize in Germany in 2004.

In 1995, Rui Chafes represented Portugal together with José Pedro Croft and Pedro Cabrita Reis at the 46th Venice Biennial and in 2004 participated in the 26th Bienal de S. Paulo with a joint project with Vera Mantero, and in 2013 he was one of the international artists invited to exhibit at the Pavilion of the Republic of Cuba, at the 55th Venice Biennale.

His work has been exhibited in Portugal and abroad since the mid-eighties and in 2014 he presented the anthological exhibition ‘The weight of paradise’ at the Modern Art Center of the Calouste Gulbenkian Foundation in Lisbon.

The artist, who has many works permanently placed in international public spaces, set up in 2008 a sculpture in Champigny-sur-Marne, on the outskirts of Paris, in honor of Portuguese emigration.
