Chinese Philharmonic Orchestra debuts in Portugal on Sunday
The Philharmonic Orchestra of China debut in Portugal on Sunday afternoon with a concert under the direction of conductor Huang Yi, in the Great Hall of the Rectory of the University of Lisbon, today announced the institution.
The concert program involves works by Richard Strauss (the first and last of “Four Last Songs” in Zou Ye’s transcripts), Tchaikovsky’s 1st Piano and Orchestra Concert, with pianist Tony Siqi Yun as soloist, and the 8th Symphony of Antonín Dvorak.
The 33-year-old conductor Huang Yi, who also leads the symphonic Kunming Nie’er and the National Ballet Company of China, studied at the Beijing Central Conservatory and later with Christian Ehwald and Hans-Dieter Baum at the High School. Music Hanns Eisler in Berlin.
Pianist Tony Siqi Yun, for his part, was born 18 years ago in Toronto, Canada. He studied Composition and Orchestra Conducting at the Julliard School in New York, and has won several awards, including the gold medal of China International Music Competition in 2014.
Tony Siqi Yun has performed with the orchestras of Philadelphia and Cleveland, and has performed solo at Cortot Hall in Paris, and Steinway Hall in New York.
Huang Yi has conducted orchestras as the Konzerthaus Berlin, Symphony of Frankfurt and Brandenburg, the Hong Kong Philharmonic and the orchestras of Shanghai and Guangzhou.
This concert, with free admission, marks the 40th anniversary of the Establishment of Diplomatic Relations between Portugal and the People’s Republic of China, and is part of the orchestra tour of the Mediterranean countries.
The China Philharmonic Orchestra emerged in 2000 as its titular conductor Long Yu, who has directed the Chicago Symphony Orchestra, the Philadelphia Orchestra and the Berlin Radio Symphony, among others.
