Christie’s auctions Giacometti’s sculpture “L’homme qui chavire” on June 30
Conceived in 1950 and shaped a year later, the bronze sculpture is considered one of the masterpieces of Giacometti’s elongated and slender figures, which emerged after the end of World War II.
The sculpture was last seen at auction in 1998, when it was sold by the estate of American artist Lillian Florsheim. “Homme qui chavire” portrays a man in the moment before he falls to the ground or, conversely, when standing up.
The art auction house says it has set the world record for the auction of a sculpture by the Swiss Alberto Giacometti with L’homme au doigt, which sold for more than 140 million dollars (115.7 million euros) in May 2015.
