The prolific Portuguese trumpeter Luís Vicente, whose activity over the last decade has taken him from the Jazz festival in August to Bimhuis in Amsterdam, has performed continuously throughout Europe, collaborating with respected people – Julien Deprez, Mark Sanders, Akira Sakata, Mars Williams or Vasco Trilla –, but also leading a trio with Gonçalo Almeida and Pedro Melo Alves.
With over thirty albums recorded, he collaborates assiduously with American expatriate John Dikeman, a rising saxophonist based in the Netherlands, whose language has been continually improved on numerous collaborations and tours.
Vicente now jumps into the big league, joining the powerful rhythm section of American bassist William Parker and drummer-percussionist Hamid Drake, partners for the last thirty years, as a duo, in William Parker’s bands, or with heavyweights like Peter Brötzmann, Frode Gjerstad, David S. Ware, Fred Anderson or Kidd Jordan.
Hamid Drake is one of the greatest living drummers and percussionists operating in jazz. He has a timbral and rhythmic mastery – both spiritual and historical – capable of embracing the desires and balances of an Africa present in Central America or Southeast Asia, in communion with great names such as Don Cherry, Pharoah Sanders or Herbie Hancock.
William Parker is legendary, turning 71 this year with a past, present and future history in jazz, improvisation and liberation. He has an immense discography, both as a leader and as a regular collaborator with others. All this since he began to stand out alongside the late Cecil Taylor.
