Cinecapitólio Rooftop: Summer nights with great outdoor movies in the heart of Lisbon

Cinecapitólio Rooftop continues to mark Lisbon’s summer with outdoor movie screenings on the iconic Capitólio terrace in Parque Mayer. From Wednesday to Saturday, at 9:30 pm, until October, the venue hosts a program that blends world cinema classics, cult films, recent hits, and offerings for all ages.

Curated by critic Rui Pedro Tendinha, the upcoming weeks’ selection revisits essential titles in cinema history—from Martin Scorsese’s Taxi Driver to Ridley Scott’s Thelma and Louise—and offers re-encounters with works that have marked different generations: Saturday Night Fever, Scent of a Woman, Romeo + Juliet, and Whiplash. There’s also no shortage of films with strong signatures, such as Tim Burton’s Beetlejuice, Quentin Tarantino’s Inglourious Basterds, or Bernard MacMahon’s authorised documentary Led Zeppelin: The Birth of the Legend.

Portuguese cinema is represented by Variações, a biopic of António Variações starring Sérgio Praia, which returns to the screen as one of the greatest moments in national cinema in recent years.

Closing out the month of August, one of the season’s highlights: Steven Spielberg’s Jaws, will be screened on the evening of August 30th, a unique opportunity to (re)watch in style and outdoors the film that inaugurated the blockbuster era and which celebrates its 50th anniversary this year. This classic continues to send chills down your spine – even on summer nights.

The program also includes romantic comedies like Pretty Woman and Notting Hill, family-friendly screenings (Inside Out 2, Lilo & Stitch, Big), and iconic musicals like Moulin Rouge and Footloose.

With lounge chairs, blankets for cooler nights, quality sound streamed through headphones, and a bar with popcorn and drinks, Cinecapitólio Rooftop offers a comfortable and immersive experience in one of the city’s most iconic locations.

Cineecapitólio Rooftop is an initiative of EGEAC – Lisboa Cultura, in partnership with Cinebox, which revives the historic role of the Capitol’s terrace as an open-air cinema space. It reinforces Parque Mayer’s role as a dynamic and accessible cultural hub in the heart of the city. The program continues through October, with new shows every week.
