The initiative’s ninth edition will feature an absolute premiere, four national premieres and a total of 11 shows.
The Vaudeville Rendez-Vous International Festival has just presented the program for the 2023 edition. Promoted by Teatro da Didascália, the initiative will take place between the 18th and 22nd of July, in the cities that make up the Quadrilátero Cultural – Barcelos, Braga, Guimarães and Vila Nova de Famalicão – and will feature 11 contemporary circus shows, of which four national premieres, one absolute and two co-productions. In addition to more than two dozen presentations, which will take place in the streets of the four cities where the festival takes place, there will also be training workshops and a parallel program dedicated to artists, students, and national and international cultural agents.
In the ninth edition of Vaudeville Rendez-Vous – and one step away from celebrating 10 years of the Festival – Teatro da Didascália bet, for the programmatic contents, on the rewriting of a series of shows that passed through the initiative in previous editions and in other contexts of the national programming. The 2023 edition will thus be marked by the revisiting of several works that are the culmination of reflection processes by various artists and companies. An example of this is the absolute premiere of the show Solos a 180º – by the Portuguese company Radar 360º –, whose motto for this new creation is the scenographic structure of a previous show. This national creation can be seen, for the first time, on July 20, at 7 pm, in Praça de Pontevedra, in Barcelos, and on July 22, at 11 am, in the Jardim do Museu dos Biscainhos, in Braga.
French, Spanish, and Belgian national premieres arrive at the Festival
From France, Spain, and Belgium, creations arrive at Vaudeville that will debut on national soil. The French company Le Doux Supplice will present the show En Attendant Le Grand Soir, which promises to defy gravity itself, revealing moments of dance and acrobatics. The performance can be seen on July 19, at 10 pm, in Largo do Pópulo, in Braga, and on July 22, at the north end of Praça D. Maria II, in Famalicão.
From Spain arrives Runa – a creation of the company Cia 104 by Amer Kabbani – who, amid the ruins of a world in flames, appears on the scene as a witness to a necessary process of personal and collective reconstruction. To watch on the 20th of July, at 10 pm, in the courtyard of the Paço dos Duques de Bragança, in Guimarães, and on the 21st of July, at the same time, at the Polidesportivo da Quinta do Aparício, in Barcelos.
Still from Spain, he will also be present at the Manolo Alcántara Festival, which will present Maña, a show in which the concept is ingenuity and will “carry his heart on his sleeve” from the beginning. The creation debuts on July 20th, at 10:00 pm, at Praça Municipal de Braga, also passing by the south end of Praça D. Maria II, in Famalicão, on July 21st, at 10:00 pm, and at the Plataforma das Artes e da Criatividade, in Guimarães, on the 22nd of July, at 22:00.
Grasshoppers (locusts), by the Belgian company Circus Katoen, is a reproduction of the resilience and vulnerability of nature and the role that we, as humans, play in it. The performance will be presented at the Praça de Pedra do Paço dos Duques de Bragança, in Guimarães, on the 20th of July, at 7 pm, at Praça Municipal de Braga, on the 21st of July, also at 7 pm, and, finally, at Praça Manuel Sotto Maior, in Famalicão, on the 22nd of July, at 7 pm.
Vaudeville hosts workshops and programs dedicated to cultural professionals
Vaudeville Rendez-Vous does not, however, live solely on shows. One of the highlights of the 2023 edition’s programming is the promotion of creation workshops – already recurrent in the last editions of the initiative – and a parallel program designed for artists, students, and national and international cultural agents. The creative workshops, scheduled for the 18th and 19th of July, in Barcelos and Braga, set the tone for the festival. The ninth edition of the Festival also includes a masterclass guided by the French company Le Doux Supplice, a round table on writing and dramaturgy in the circus, and a pitching session for programmers and artistic agents.
