Cláudia Abreu in Portugal to present VIRGINIA

Teatro Maria Matos

The renowned Brazilian actress finally brings her first stage creation to Portugal. The powerful monologue, VIRGINIA, is on stage at Teatro Maria Matos on February 6, 7, 8, and 9.

Cláudia Abreu presents her first monologue, conceived and written by herself based on the life and work of Virginia Woolf. On stage, the actress interprets the brilliant English writer, whose journey was marked by personal tragedies and a thin line between lucidity and madness. The structure of the text relies on the most characteristic resource of the writer’s literature: the alternation of streams of consciousness, capable of ‘giving body’ to the real or fictional voices, always present in her mind. The dramaturgy of “VIRGINIA” was conceived as an intimate inventory of the author’s life. In her last moments, she remembers significant events from her life, her passion for knowledge, happy moments with friends from the Bloomsbury intellectual group, and revealing affections, pains, and her creative process.

VIRGINIA is the result of the various intersections that Virginia Woolf’s work made with Cláudia Abreu’s trajectory. The life and work of the English author are the driving forces behind this show, the result of a long process of research and experimentation that lasted more than five years. The first monologue of the actress’s career also marks her debut in dramaturgy and the return of the partnership with Amir Haddad, who directed her in ‘Noite de Reis’ (1997). Premiered in 2022, the show has since had two seasons in São Paulo and Rio de Janeiro, also touring more than 20 Brazilian cities and attracting over 40,500 spectators.

Cláudia’s relationship with Virginia Woolf began in ‘Orlando’, directed by Bia Lessa, in 1989, at the age of 18. However, it was in 2016 that she reacquainted herself and was deeply immersed in the author’s universe. After reading and rereading several books, including memoirs, biographies, and diaries, the desire to write about Virginia spoke louder.

‘I fell in love with her again. I was fascinated to realize how a person managed to build this brilliant work with so much imbalance, personal tragedies, and problems she had in life. How did she gather the pieces?’, questions the actress, who sees ‘Virginia’ also as a milestone of maturity in her trajectory: ‘The text also comes from this desire to create something that touches me, that I find interesting to talk about today. To talk about being human, about what we do with the pains of existence, about the uncertainties in artistic creation, and also to discuss the condition of women yesterday and today. I could not portray such a deep character without the personal and theatrical experience I have today,’ declares Cláudia Abreu.
