CNB traz Giselle ao TMJB

The ballet Giselle is CNB’s proposal for this festive season. The ballet will be on stage at Teatro Municipal Joaquim Benite, on the 29th and 30th of December, Thursday and Friday, at 9 pm.

The world premiere of Giselle took place in Paris, at the Teatro da Academia Real de Música, on the 28th of June 1841, and the premiere by the Companhia Nacional de Bailado (CNB) took place in Lisbon, at the Teatro Nacional de São Carlos, on the 15th. October 1987. Since then, ballet has been in the company’s repertoire and continues to regularly seduce audiences of all ages.

Albrecht and Giselle make up the most famous couple in romantic ballet. Based on a screenplay by Théophile Gautier and Vernoy de Saint-Georges, based on a Germanic legend, Giselle presents, in two acts, the story of a fragile peasant girl who falls in love with a boy, unaware of the fact that he is, in fact, Albrecht, the Duke of Silesia. The noble regularly visits Giselle but hides her true identity, as well as his commitment to another woman. The young woman is increasingly obsessed with this stranger but, when she discovers the truth, she dies of heartbreak. In the play, there is an opposition between the realistic, terrestrial universe and an oneiric world, populated by female spirits. Especially in the second act when full of remorse, Albrecht visits Giselle’s tomb and is tormented by the Willis, virgins who died before the wedding night and who appear between midnight and dawn to take revenge, capturing any man who enters. in his domains and forcing him to dance to death. The Queen of Willis condemns Albrecht, but Giselle’s love prevents his death. Albrecht is saved and Giselle eventually forgives him, but she is doomed to be a Willis forever.
