The collective Lá No Xepangara presents a tribute music to José Afonso

For the first time live in Lisbon, on October 10th, at 9 PM, opening the concert cycle Liberdade na Nova, at the Universidade Nova de Lisboa.

Premiered on January 27th at the Casa das Artes de Famalicão, as part of the celebrations for the 50th anniversary of the 25th of April 1974, the project was also presented in Spain, in a large show held in Madrid, also on the occasion of the 25th of April celebrations.

The collective, created and directed by guitarist and composer Manuel de Oliveira, brings together the voices of Selma Uamusse (Mozambique), Karyna Gomes (Guinea-Bissau), Isabel Novella (Mozambique), Edu Mundo (Portugal), and Fred Martins (Brazil), also counting on Dilson Pedro on drums, Carlos Garcia on keys, Albano Fonseca on bass, and with the consultation of journalist Viriato Teles.

“Lá No Xepangara” aims to reflect the strong presence of African culture in the life and work of José Afonso and his role in the struggle for decolonization, democratization, and the development of Lusophone society and culture.

Based on the work of José Afonso, as a paradigmatic example of the determining role of art and culture in the Portuguese revolution, the project has as its main goal the approach of the Lusophone community and young people to an essential personality in the struggle for Democracy, thus highlighting the contemporaneity and, above all, the universal character of José Afonso’s work.
