Porto Ageas Coliseu celebrates Freedom with JP Simões

At the Coliseu Porto Ageas, the 25th of April celebrations begin on the evening of 23rd April, at 9 pm, with a very special concert by JP Simões: a tribute to José Mário Branco, one of the personalities who most marked Portuguese music since the 1960s, and who left us in 2019.
“JP Simões sings José Mário Branco” is the title of the album that the singer and composer released in 2024, and which includes songs such as “Do que um homem e capaz”, “Sopram ventos adversos”, “Mariazinha” or “Mudam-se os tempos, mudam-se as vontades”, with the voice of JP Simões accompanied by the guitar of Nuno Ferreira, the percussion of Ruca Rebordão and the double bass of Pedro Pinto.
JP Simões fell in love with José Mário Branco’s music when, as a teenager, he heard the song “Inquietação” on the radio. When he released his first album, in 2006, he had no doubts about including a version of that magnetic song: “Inside, restlessness, restlessness / It’s just restlessness, restlessness / Why, I don’t know, Why, I don’t know / Why, I don’t know yet.” José Mário Branco would meet with the musician from Coimbra to praise the version.
“Like a blood transfusion, I believe I began to feel closer and closer to José Mário Branco’s music as I played and sang it, whenever the opportunity arose. As if the ethical and poetic depth of his songs were progressively occupying and strengthening a place where there had previously been insecurity and uncertainty, as I sang and sang them and believed more and more in what I sang,” says JP Simões. “Is José Mário Branco’s voice now timely and necessary? Is it poignant and overflowing with beauty and courage? Without a doubt,” he stresses.
Now, JP Simões sings live, on April 23, Wednesday, at 9 pm, on the same stage where José Mário Branco sang so many times.
