Coliseu Porto Ageas celebrates Europe Day with the show “Europe – Metamorphoses of Love”

On Friday, May 12, the Porto Ageas Coliseum celebrates European culture with a show by the Portuguese Philharmonic Orchestra dedicated to the myth of the Phoenician princess Europa. With works by European composers Antonín Dvořák, Richard Strauss, and Sara Ross, the tour of “Europe – Metamorphoses of Love” will end at the Berlin Philharmonic in June.

Conducted by maestro Osvaldo Ferreira, the show begins with “Concerto for Cello and Orchestra in B Minor, Op. 104”, by Dvořák, the last concerto for soloists written by this extraordinary Czech composer. The soloist is the American musician Jed Barahal.

Metamorphosed, by the German Richard Strauss, will also be interpreted, as a study of 23 solo strings (ten violins, five violas, five cellos, and three double basses) composed between August 1944 and March 1945, during the final phase of World War II.

The work that gives name to the concert is by composer Sara Ross. “Europa – Metamorfoses de Amor” has its world premiere in this series of Concerts dedicated to Europe and explores the mythical theme of the Phoenician princess Europa, through the text of Alexandre Honrado, Portuguese writer and playwright, and the solos of Ana Maria Pinto (soprano) and by Miguel Maduro Dias (baritone). The scenography is by Jorge Balça.
