On October 10th, Coliseu Porto Ageas premieres a new production of Giacomo Puccini’s opera “La Bohème,” one of the most popular works in the opera repertoire.
On stage, a talented cast of national and international soloists joins the Chorus and Orchestra of the Opera Academy and the City to tell and sing this opera of youth, here with musical direction by Maestro José Ferreira Lobo.
Based on the novel “Scènes de la vie de bohème” (Scenes from Bohemian Life) by Henri Murger, it premiered in 1896 at the Teatro Regio in Turin, with a libretto by Luigi Illica and Giuseppe Giacosa. The story takes audiences back to their youth: set in the Latin Quarter of Paris, where a group of young artists struggle to survive amidst dreams, bohemian life, and the hardships of life.
At the heart of the narrative is the intense and moving love story between the poet Rodolfo and the fragile seamstress Mimì, marked by an overwhelming passion, made of poetry, sacrifice, and tenderness, but also of distance and inevitability.
A celebration of youth, friendship, love, and art, it is also a stark portrait of precariousness and loss. More than a century after its premiere, “La Bohème” continues to move audiences worldwide with arias such as “Che gelida manina,” “Mi chiamano Mimì,” and “Donde lieta uscì.”
“These bohemians are young people who, even after the first act, we feel like friends; we love them. Perhaps that’s why ‘La Bohème’ makes us cry more than with other operas, without shame, because it’s so close: there are no good guys or bad guys, no heroes or victims, no condemnations or revenge, it’s us with these ‘friends,'” describes Alfonso DeFilippis, who directs this new production, a commission from the Coliseu to the Opera in the Academy and the City.
“La Bohème” takes the stage and descends into the orchestra pit on Friday, October 10th, at 9 pm. Tickets cost between €15 and €45 and are available at Coliseu Porto Ageas, Ticketline, and regular outlets. Discounts: 20% for students, seniors over 65, families (+3 members), Friends of the Coliseu, and Porto Card holders.
