Coliseu Porto Ageas evokes Zeca Afonso’s last concert

with contemporary artists and historical names together on stage

The concert brings together historical names linked to José Afonso on stage, such as Francisco Fanhais, Júlio Pereira, Janita Salomé, Rui Pato, Octávio Sérgio, Nuno Oliveira, João Afonso and the Sociedade Musical Fraternidade Operária Grandolense.

The concert will feature six guest singers, who will be announced over the next six days. The first guests revealed: Jorge Palma, Teresa Salgueiro and B Fachada.

Coliseu Porto Ageas joins the José Afonso Association to present the concert “Zeca Afonso: Greater than Thought”. A unique celebration of the last concert of Zeca Afonso’s career, which took place in this concert hall 40 years ago, at the same time as it marks the 50th anniversary of the Carnation Revolution, of which “Grândola, Vila Morena” became a symbol when it was one of the passwords that set April 25, 1974, in motion.

Scheduled for June 29th, at 9 pm, the concert brings to the Coliseu musicians who were on this stage with José Afonso for the last time, names linked to him and voices known to the general public, who will sing some of the authors most iconic songs from “Bring Another Friend Too”.

The first part will be performed by historic names such as Francisco Fanhais, Júlio Pereira, Janita Salomé, Rui Pato, Octávio Sérgio, Nuno Oliveira, João Afonso and Sociedade Musical Fraternidade Operária Grandolense, to interpret, among others, the themes from the album Cantigas do Maio, released in 1971 and which would help to change the path of Portuguese music forever.

The second part will bring together six singers from different generations and musical families to sing some of José Afonso’s most memorable songs, and who will show on stage their connection to Zeca’s legacy, with new arrangements and artistic direction by musician Pedro Vidal. The first name revealed is Jorge Palma.

“We intend to celebrate the life and work of Zeca Afonso, through a unique show with the presence of six renowned artists who will pay tribute to those who gave so much to their and our lives, and to Portuguese music, whose names we will reveal in the next days”, explains Miguel Guedes, President of the Coliseu. “It is also with great honour that we will bring together the historic musicians who accompanied him on that memorable night, bringing them all to the stage, recreating their memories”, he highlights.

“We invite everyone to this historic moment, in a concert hall that praises and keeps alive the ideals of struggle, freedom and hope that José Afonso immortalized in his songs.”

On May 25, 1983, Zeca Afonso took the stage for the last time, at the Coliseu in the city of Porto, surrounded by many friends. Tickets sold out months in advance, such as the desire to pay homage to one of the fundamental names in Portuguese music and a symbol of resistance to Democracy. The only publicly known images are those of the spectacle at the Coliseu dos Recreios, five months earlier. But the last concert, held in Porto 40 years ago, continues to echo in the memories of many.

Tickets for the concert “Zeca Afonso: Greater than Thought” were symbolically put on sale on April 25th, costing between €12 and €25 and are available at the Coliseu Porto Ageas box office, coliseu.pt, Ticketline and usual locations.
