Coliseu Porto Ageas will pay tribute to the Portuguese philharmony

The next Promenade Concert at Coliseu Porto Ageas, on Sunday, April 10, at 11:00 am, will be a tribute to the philharmonic, with the concert “Arco-iris“.

The Portuguese Symphony Band, directed by conductor Francisco Ferreira, will perform a program exclusively made up of works by Portuguese composers from different generations – one of them in world premiere.

For this occasion, the conductor and composer Ilídio Costa wrote a March entitled “Banda Sinfónica Portuguesa – Tributo à Filarmonia”, dedicated to this institution, in recognition of its work over the years. This will be the work that will be heard in concert for the first time.

Another of the highlights of the concert will be “Arco-iris”, by Duarte Pestana (1911-1974), a Fantasia that became a central work of the repertoire for Banda em Portugal due to the quality of its musical construction that visits various environments, from popular melodies Portuguese to the language of jazz.

Navegar, navegar” by the singer-songwriter Fausto Bordalo Dias, with arrangement by the conductor and composer Jorge Salgueiro,Feira de Maio – Paso Doble”, by the young composer Nelson Jesus, and “Rapsódia Hilariana”, by the captain, conductor and composer João Carlos de Sousa Morais (1860-1919), complete the program.

At the same time, some historical personalities of the Portuguese philharmonic will be honoured, from composers and conductors to instrumentalists who have passed through historic and emblematic orchestras such as the Orquestra Sinfónica da RDP Porto, Orquestra do Norte, military musicians from the army, from the National Republican Guard, but also teachers of Conservatories and Academies that have developed a remarkable work in the philharmonic bands of reference in the north of the country.

Philharmonic bands play a fundamental role in the preservation, dissemination and musical training, as well as in stimulating the cultural life of their communities, from north to south of the country.

The Promenade Concerts are a fun experience for families and children who, once a month, can discover the secrets and curiosities of an eclectic repertoire of concerts and commented shows, with the participation of several orchestras and special guests.

In this relaxed* training session for kids and adults, musicologist Jorge Castro Ribeiro will tell the public all the curiosities about musical works, enhanced by Sara Botelho’s multimedia design. There will even be a quiz immediately before the concert for spectators.

Tickets cost between €8 and €14. Discounts: Students 50%, Coliseum Friends and Family ticket (+ 3 people) 25%, Over 65s 25%.

* Relaxed Sessions are inclusive theatre, dance, cinema sessions or other types of cultural offerings, adapted to all people and families who prefer or benefit from a more relaxed environment: people with attention deficit, intellectual disabilities, autism spectrum, sensory or communication disorders, as well as families with young children.

The first Relaxed Session at the Coliseum will take place precisely this Sunday, April 10th.
