Collection of the artist Fernando Calhau donated to the Gulbenkian Foundation
The documentation gathered in this collection will allow to deepen the artistic path of Fernando Calhau, a singular artist, author of a unique work in the Portuguese artistic context, and widely represented in the Collection of the Center of Modern Art with 695 works, including painting, sculpture, drawing, photography and printmaking.
The donation proposal was presented by the artist Rui Chafes, Fernando Calhau’s legal heir, immediately accepted by the Gulbenkian Foundation.
In 1973, Fernando Calhau graduated in Painting at the Escola Superior de Belas Artes in Lisbon, studied at the Slade School of Fine Art, in London, with a scholarship from the Calouste Gulbenkian Foundation, and studied printmaking with Bartolomeu Cid dos Santos.
He held his first solo exhibition in 1968, at Cooperativa Gravura, in Lisbon.
