Sporting CP lived up to expectations, defeating debutants Kairat Almaty 4-1 in Alvalade in the first round of the Champions League group stage.
Sporting CP began to press high up the pitch and created several scoring opportunities, but their lack of effectiveness and few shots on goal weren’t enough to open the scoring, amid a suffocating period for the Kazakh team.

In the 21st minute, Luís Suarez was fouled in the box, and the referee awarded a penalty to Sporting. He was called upon to beat Morten Hjulmand, whose uninspired, underpowered shot allowed Kalmyrza to make a save without much effort.
Kairat rarely found the net, only abandoning their low block on counterattacks, which happened in the 33rd minute when Satpaev shot outside the box, and João Virgínia made a great save.
The Lions only broke the deadlock near halftime, when Trincão, with a well-placed shot, made it 1-0.

The second half began with Kairat more relaxed, trying to find the Lions’ goal, but always with little threat.
Rui Borges felt the need to change the team, and in the 60th minute, made a triple substitution that was immediately felt. In five minutes, the Alvalade team scored three goals: Trincão’s brace with an assist from Fresneda in the 65th minute, followed shortly after by goals from Alisson Santos and Quenda in the 67th and 68th minutes.

Without any major changes until the end of the match, Sporting dominated and maintained possession of the ball, but could not extend their lead, despite opportunities to do so.
The Kairat team also made history at Alvalade, scoring their first Champions League goal through Edmilson Santos.
Sporting thus started the Champions League group stage on a high note.
