“La Traviata”, one of Giuseppe Verdi’s most emblematic operas, will be on stage in Portugal, on November 5th and 6th, at Casino Estoril and Coliseu dos Recreios (Lisbon), respectively, presented by the Materlírica company.
A tragic novel told in three acts that tells the story of Violeta, a coveted Parisian courtesan, and her impossible love for the young Alfredo Germont. The intensity of the narrative and its sentimental density constitute a landmark, this being the great Verdi opera that everyone should see.
“La Traviata”, based on the novel “A Dama das Camélias”, by Alexandre Dumas, is a story of love, encounters and disagreements. It tells us the story between Violeta, a courtesan, and Alfredo, a man of lineage, who falls in love with her. Violeta knows she has tuberculosis but omits that fact to Alfredo. They end up moving in together, but his father looks for the Parisian and asks her to stay away from his son, as this situation is damaging the reputation of the whole family. Giving in to Alfredo’s father’s requests, Violeta gives up her love so that the young man can marry someone of her condition. Alfredo is devastated and, not knowing the truth, mistreats Violeta who suffers in secret. Already very ill, Violeta receives a visit from Alfredo who, upon learning of her sacrifice, comes to ask her forgiveness. The two promise never to separate but it is too late and Violeta dies in her lover’s arms.
This is a memorable show, performed by an international company, full of great names in classical opera, not to be missed on November 5th, at Casino Estoril, at 9:00 pm and, on November 6th, at Coliseu dos Recreios (Lisbon), at 19:00.
