Complô premieres in over a dozen cities this Thursday

The life story of Bruno Furtado, a Creole rapper and political activist known as Ghoya, serves as the starting point for Complô, a new documentary by João Miller Guerra.

After its world premiere in July at the Marseille International Film Festival (FIDMarseille), and its presentation at Doclisboa in October, where it received an Honorable Mention, Complô arrives in cinemas this Thursday, November 20th, in several cities across the country: Barreiro, Coimbra, Covilhã, Guarda, Leiria, Lisbon, Porto, São João da Madeira, Setúbal, Sintra, and Viana do Castelo. Complô is João Miller Guerra’s first solo film and offers an intimate portrait of the trajectory of Bruno Furtado, a rapper and political activist known as Ghoya, whose story reveals the contradictions of a country that never recognized him.

Complô

“An orphan of the country where he was born, an orphan of the State. Imprisoned for half his life, always free.” Born in Portugal, Bruno Furtado did not have access to Portuguese citizenship. Son of a São Toméan mother and a Cape Verdean father, he grew up marked by structural racism, inequality, and a long period of imprisonment, which he mentions in detail in the documentary. Complô follows the recording of Ghoya’s album and inhabits this tense space between the vulnerability of his experience and the strength of his lyrics that fuel his continued existence. Through the complicit gaze of João Miller Guerra, not only the multiple layers of Ghoya emerge, but also the echoes of the lives of many other children of immigrants, marginalized Portuguese, deprived of equal opportunities.

With a screenplay and direction by João Miller Guerra, editing by Pedro Cabeleira, cinematography by Vasco Viana, and production by Filipa Reis, Complô is a production of Uma Pedra no Sapato, distributed by Magenta. Over the next few days, special sessions are still planned with the participation of Ghoya, João Miller Guerra, and other guests.
