Composer Carlos Caires presents the album Os Sons em Volta

29 de abril, 19h – Lisboa Incomum

A central name in contemporary Portuguese music, Carlos Caires is the protagonist in the new album release by the record label Artway.

His work has already earned him the Joly Braga Santos Award, the Cláudio Carneyro Award and the ACARTE Award, among many other distinctions, and stands out for its surprising sound constructions based on creative dialogues between acoustic instruments and electronics — Carlos Caires is a specialist in the development of software for electroacoustic music and computer-assisted composition. The double album Os Sons em Volta, released on April 29, encompasses 14 works composed between 2005 and 2022, the result of the numerous commissions he received throughout his career. Including collaborations with the Gulbenkian Orchestra, the Porto Casa da Música Symphony Orchestra, the ECCE Choir, Drumming GP, the Alcobaça Symphonic Band, the Lisbon School of Music Wind Orchestra, but also small solo ensembles, it is a fascinating artistic portrait of a restless, curious and innovative inventor of sounds.

The album will be presented on April 29th, at 7pm, at Lisboa Incomum. This presentation will feature a conversation with the participation of Vanessa Pires (Artway publisher), Carlos Caires (composer), Jaime Reis (Lisboa Incomum and DME) and Luís Tinoco (composer). The video presentation of the album will be shown and a sound installation will be inaugurated for spatialized listening in surround and three-dimensional format of all the works on the double album. The installation will be on display at Lisboa comum on April 29th and 30th, with free entry.

According to the composer, “The set of works gathered in this double CD covers a period of almost 20 years, from more recent pieces, composed when I began planning this recording project in 2022, going back to 2004, the year in which I composed the piece Quattro for percussion group and electronics — beginning a trajectory in which the presence of electronics became a constant in my production. The selection and organization of the pieces was made in order to show this journey, trying to diversify the listening experience of the CD as a whole, by covering varied chamber formations: from duets and quartets to larger ensembles, including wind orchestra and symphony orchestra, as well as concertante, choral and choral-instrumental music. Despite this apparent diversity and the natural evolution of any composer’s language over such an extensive period of time, I think that the works gathered here reveal a line of aesthetic and stylistic coherence.”
