Physical purchases paid through the Multibanco Network fell by 34% in the second half of January, due to the new confinement, and by 22% in the entire month.
With most non-essential stores closed again, online commerce (‘e-commerce’) is again a relevant indicator in boosting consumption in the return to general confinement and the more restrictive measures in controlling the pandemic, representing in the last month of January 16% of total electronic purchases.
In that context, payment via MB Way stood out as one of the preferred systems, both by individual consumers and companies, with a 269% growth in this channel, compared to the same period last year.
Also in-store purchases, the increase in the use of MB Way as a form of payment has been very significant, rising 234% in the last month, compared to January of last year, before the first confirmed cases of covid-19 in Portugal.
Thus, in January this year, with new confinement decreed from the middle of the month, there was an increase of 37% in online purchases, compared to the same period last year.
