School community in the territory of the Historical Villages of Portugal will be made aware of the importance of sustainability

Between October 10th and November 9th, the Historical Villages of Portugal – Tourist Development Association (AHP – ADT) will take the “Energy Route” to students at schools in the territory of the Historical Villages of Portugal Network (municipalities of Almeida, Arganil, Belmonte, Celorico da Beira, Figueira de Castelo Rodrigo, Fundão, Idanha-a-Nova, Mêda, Sabugal and Trancoso), with the aim of increasing energy literacy, awareness and training on the importance of preserving the environment and sustainability of the planet.

The sustainability of the destination is one of the most important pillars of AHP – ADT’s development strategy for the Network it represents. It should be remembered that AHP – ADT signed, in March this year, a project in partnership with ADENE – Agency for Energy, E-REDES, and Greenvolt, with the aim of making the 12 Historical Villages of Portugal the first carbon-neutral destination from the country.

It is following this project that, now, AHP – ADT and ADENE – Agency for Energy, have prepared a set of initiatives within the school community, in order to raise awareness among students and teachers of sustainability issues. Thus, between October 10th and November 9th, AHP – ADT and ADENE – Energy Agency will promote the “Energy Route” in schools across the territory, a series of sessions aimed at increasing energy literacy.

The initiative is aimed at students attending the 8th and 9th years of each school group in the 10 Municipalities that make up the Historical Villages of Portugal Network, with each session lasting an average of 45 minutes and allowing 50 students to participate. The objective is to foster interest and encourage the practice of conscious behaviors, in the face of current environmental problems, through a fun, didactic approach and the exchange of ideas with students. In the Historic Village of Monsanto, the “Energy Route” also passes through the Primary School: there will be a session for the 3rd and 4th years.

This is an awareness-raising measure that will be prepared according to the age of the target audience, which aims to convey the importance of saving consumption and responsible behaviors to adopt. The theme of mobility will also be addressed, emphasizing gentle modes and public transport. Energy and climate action are therefore the focus of this initiative, which seeks that children and young people can constitute themselves as facilitating “agents” to convey a very clear message: the commitment of territory around a problem on a global scale. which, step by step, aims to make a difference and contribute to better “health” for our planet.

About Historical Villages of Portugal
Among the hills and valleys of the verdant landscape of the interior of Portugal, full of legends and castles, flavors and traditions, there are 12 simple villages where you feel like getting lost. Almeida, Belmonte, Castelo Mendo, Castelo Novo, Castelo Rodrigo, Idanha-a-Velha, Linhares da Beira, Marialva, Monsanto, Piódão, Sortelha and Trancoso: the Historical Villages of Portugal, a destination of which there are 12, appear as hidden paradises that take us on a journey through the time of kings and queens, of epic and infinite battles that wrote History as we know it today. They also guarantee unforgettable moments of leisure, adventure, and discovery, seasoned with the unparalleled aromas and flavors of the region, which make up its typical gastronomy.
In the territory of the Historical Villages of Portugal, there is an endless number of hiking trails and cycling and mountain biking routes – such as the Grande Route 22, the longest Walking and cycling route in Europe and Portugal, with around 600 km. Grande Route 22 has the Leading Quality Trails – Best of Europe seal, awarded by the European Ramblers Association.
The Historical Villages of Portugal are the first network destination – on a global scale – and the first national destination to receive BIOSPHERE DESTINATION certification. And, in 2020, they were the first destination nationwide to create the “Responsible Tourist Manifesto”, reminding their visitors of the importance of respect for nature.
