Kings Concert at TMJB, January 7th
The Orquestra Sinfónica Portuguesa returns to the TMJB, on the 7th of January, at 9 pm, for the Concerto de Reis. The musical direction is by Antonio Pirolli, and they will perform Symphony no. 7 in E major WAB 107, by Anton Bruckner
Symphony No. 7 by Anton Bruckner (1824-1896), dedicated to Louis II of Bavaria, was written in 1881 and revised in 1885. The premiere took place in Leipzig, in 1884, under the direction of Arthur Nikish (conductor who was in São Carlos in May 1901 with the Berlin Philharmonic) and earned the composer the greatest success of his life. The popularity of this symphony is perhaps due to the extraordinary lyrical burst that emerges from the work right from the first bars, when, amidst the trembling strings, an unforgettable theme of overwhelming lyricism rises, launched by the cellos. Bruckner claimed to have heard it in dreams. The composition is structured in four movements. The second, a monumental Adagio, was powerfully used by Luchino Visconti in some scenes of the film Senso. Bruckner began writing it with the death of Richard Wagner in mind, then very ill. In this movement, Wagnerian tubas are used for the first time in a symphony. The Finale is not as imposing as that of other great symphonies by the composer – there were even those who compared it, at the end of the 20th century, to the end of a symphony by Haydn.
Antonio Pirolli is currently the principal conductor of the Portuguese Symphony Orchestra. Originally from Rome, he was musical director at the Opera in Ankara (1995-2001) and Istanbul (2001-2005), having already directed operas in important concert halls, such as Teatro Colón (Buenos Aires), Tessisches Staatstheater (Wiesbaden), Teatro dell’Opera (Rome), Teatro alla Scala (Milan), Teatro Carlo Felice (Genoa) and Teatro Bellini (Catania).
