The Tourism Authority of Thailand (TAT) is associated with the Universal Exhibition of the Portuguese Matrix – Camões 500 years old by supporting the conference “Camões – Citizen of the World and the Globalization of Food by the Hand of Portuguese Sailors. Thailand – The Portuguese Influence on Thai Kitchen”, which will take place on 8 April, at 6 p.m., at the Galveias Palace Library in Campo Pequeno, Lisbon.
During the event, with free access, a Thai gastronomy tasting will be offered in a TAT partnership with Siam Square restaurant.
Margarida Pereira-Müller, scientific documentalist, researcher and writer specializing in gastronomy, will lead the conference in which she will address the influence of Portuguese presence in Thailand, with special emphasis on cooking.
According to Rosario Louro, representative of TAT in Portugal, “this initiative allows not only to highlight the passage of Luís de Camões through Southeast Asia but also to remember the important historical ties that unite the two countries.” She also stresses that ” gastronomy is an authentic reflection of Portuguese influence in Thailand and a striking example of this heritage, which Thais value so much”.
The presence of the Portuguese in Thailand from the 16th century left a legacy that is reflected in the introduction of ingredients in Thai cuisine, many coming from other countries where the Portuguese passed, such as Malagueta, Tomato, Potato, Maize, lettuce, cabbage, papaya, anona, guava, pineapple, pumpkin, sweet potato, cashew nuts and peanuts, as well as different forms of making, in which the threads of eggs and other desserts inspired by the Portuguese convent.
