Consumers who return plastic bottles will receive a prize

The terms and criteria of this pilot project will still be defined, but it should be fully in place by the end of next year.

The State will finance a system to encourage the return of non-reusable plastic beverage containers.

The measure was published on Wednesday in Diário de República and, according to the same document, should be implemented by December 31, 2019.

In other words, consumers will receive a premium, which will be determined by the Ministry of the Environment, whenever they return to non-reusable plastic bottles of commercial supermarkets.

The measure provides that large commercial areas which market packaged drinks are “obliged to make available space in the establishment, free of charge, for the installation of equipment” necessary for the return of the packaging.

Article 23 A makes it clear that “by the end of the third quarter of 2021 the Government will present to the Assembly of the Republic an evaluation report on the impact of the implementation of the incentive system“.

“Alongside this measure, the law also stipulates that large commercial areas that are part of this pilot project are obliged to implement on their premises an area duly indicated and exclusively dedicated to the trade of beverages in reusable or 100% biodegradable packaging identified under the terms of law“.

Promulgated on December 14, the law enters into force as of tomorrow, as read in the electronic page of the Diário da República.
