Conversation: Gender and Equality: rights for the future?

On September 5th, Thursday, at 6 pm, Mantras at Coliseu Porto Ageas will present “Gender and Equality: rights to the Future?”. A conversation about conquered freedoms and rights, which aims to reflect on present and future challenges.

The event is part of the celebrations of the 50th anniversary of the 25th of April, also celebrating the 30th anniversary of the First International Conference on Population and Development. Two fundamental events – on a national and international scale, respectively – recognized Gender Equality and the right to family planning as essential for the achievement of Development and Human Rights.

Social and political obstacles to the realization of sexual and reproductive rights, equality and inclusion have intensified. 50 years after the Carnation Revolution and 30 years after the largest global event on population issues ever held, what remains to be done and accomplished?

At a time when the world is increasingly complex and challenging, the conversation will also focus on current threats to women’s rights, whether in Europe or around the world, and aims to discuss what actions and policies are underway, or missing, to ensure the well-being of future generations. Anti-democratic movements have become politically legitimized and today influence a global discourse that needs to be deconstructed: what these movements are, how they are financed, and how they grow and develop.

The panel, moderated by Carla Miranda, cultural programmer and former deputy in the Assembly of the Republic, will be composed of Neil Datta, Executive Director and founder of the European Parliamentary Forum for Sexual and Reproductive Rights (who will speak in English), Mónica Ferro, Director of the United Nations Population Fund (in London), by Cátia Moreira de Carvalho, researcher at the Institute of Security and Global Affairs at the University of Leiden, and the University of Porto, and Sofia Oliveira, researcher at the international project QUALREP: The Quality of Women’s Political Representation, at ISCTE.

“Gender and Equality: rights for the future?” takes place in the Attic Hall of the Coliseum. Entry is free, subject to prior ticket collection, from September 4th, at 1 pm, at the Coliseum box office, until the time of the debate. Capacity is subject to space limitations.
