Copernicus draws map with analysis of pollution levels worldwide

The platform shows the average concentrations of nitrogen dioxide (NO2), in analysis of the last 14 days. Unsurprisingly, Lisbon and Porto are the cities with the highest levels in Portugal, but the country is not one of those that stands out the most for the negative global level.

NO2 is a reactive gas that results mainly from the burning of fossil fuels at high temperatures, namely in the engines of motor vehicles and in some industrial processes. In terms of health, it can have a significant impact, increasing, for example, the likelihood of developing respiratory problems.

The map doesn’t just show changes over time on a global scale. It also offers the possibility for users to zoom in on the regions that interest them most.

The concentrations of NO2 in the atmosphere can vary widely during the day-to-day, due to changes in emissions. On the other hand, changes in climatic conditions, such as sunlight, temperature and wind, can also affect the concentration of the levels of this gas.

Launched in 2017 to monitor air quality, the Copernicus Sentinel-5P has been in the news recently in the midst of a pandemic. Just recently, ESA and the European Commission launched the RACE platform, with data from the satellite, which wants to assess the impact of COVID-19 and monitor Europe’s recovery.
