Corinthians beats Santos

A goal at the beginning of the first half and another at the start of the second gave Corinthians a 2-0 victory over Santos, this Sunday morning, in Itaquera, for the fourth round of the Paulista Championship.

The team was much superior in the initial stage and held on with one less throughout the second period – after Janderson’s expulsion, for celebrating the goal with the fans in the short wall. Tiago Nunes’ team, who had come from two games without a win, deserved the result against a very bad Santos on the field, beaten by the absence of some of their main players. Everaldo and Janderson scored the goals.

With the victory, Corinthians rose to seven points and assumed the leadership of Group D, three ahead of Guarani and Ferroviária – but the team from Campinas receives Santo André at 19h this Sunday and resumes the lead if they win. Santos remained with seven points and will lose the leadership of Group A if Ponte Preta at least draw with Inter de Limeira, away from home, at 5 pm on Monday.

Santos now has a full week for training. He only returns to the field for Paulistão on Monday, the 10th, at home, against Botafogo de Ribeirão Preto. The day before, Corinthians hosts Inter de Limeira. But the game that matters most to Timão is this Wednesday, at 21.30, in Paraguay, against Guaraní, for the previous stage of the Libertadores.
