The Council of Ministers today approved the creation of the strategic program ‘Saber Fazer’, which had been presented a year ago by the Ministry of Culture, aimed at safeguarding traditional Portuguese arts and crafts.
Among the measures included in this national program are the installation of a technological center, the creation of a learning program, and support for the development of local businesses linked to traditional arts.
This national strategy was announced in July 2019 by the Minister of Culture, Graça Fonseca, defending traditional artisanal production as “a dynamic, innovative and sustainable sector“.
At the time, the “Saber Fazer Português” program was presented as a partnership between Culture and the governmental areas of Economy, Tourism, and Labor and designed for a timeline up to 2024.
Today’s resolution of the Council of Ministers reinforces the three axes on which this national program must be based – transversality, territoriality and technology -, to ensure that that artisanal knowledge reaches more generations and gains more economic and tourist value.
