Covilhã launches project for recycling masks from schools
Covilhã will launch a project that aims to implement new solutions for end-of-life clothing and that includes recycling masks from schools in this municipality in the district of Castelo Branco.
The municipality explains that the goal is to develop an innovative environmentally friendly circular textile economy system and that the project is advancing in a partnership with the TO-BE-GREEN platform.
The school sector is advancing in the next school year with the placement of suitable containers outside schools where students can hand over their individual end-of-life masks for later collection and treatment by TO-BE-GREEN.
The textile materials will then be converted into raw material for other products based on textile fibers, at the Waste Recovery Center of the University of Minho.
In addition, the municipality and the platform will also promote a social store for the delivery and sharing of garments, which will take place in collaboration with the municipality’s private social solidarity institutions and with other entities that support the most disadvantaged.
Recalling the importance of the fashion industry, the respective use of natural resources and the inherent environmental problems, the municipality of Covilhã, a municipality where the textile industry has a strong weight and tradition, highlights that the project will allow an environmentally correct treatment.
It also points out that TO-BE-GREEN is preparing to apply for a European patent for its utility model, as it is an innovative solution in the international context for end-of-life clothing.
