A crash with an opponent on the 12th lap, when he was already in 19th place and was in full recovery (he had started from 24th on the starting grid), led to Ivan Domingues’ retirement from the second race of the Italian Formula 3 Grand Prix, which took place this Sunday at the Imola circuit.
The Portuguese rookie, who had already anticipated a weekend of “a lot of fighting”, was thus prevented from making another good recovery, as he had also demonstrated in the Feature Race of the Bahrain Grand Prix, in April.
“This was not the weekend I was expecting. I have great memories of Imola, but that’s how racing is. This retirement is proof that nothing is guaranteed, and we always have to keep working to ensure our progress, especially in a category as competitive as Formula 3. Now it’s time to lift our heads and prepare for the next race,” says Ivan Domingues, who also had his race affected by an off-track accident on Saturday that cost him 30 seconds.
The Formula 3 World Championship continues from May 22 to 25, at the Monaco Grand Prix.
About Ivan Domingues
Ivan Domingues (Leiria, 5/5/2006) started karting, inspired by his father and brother, when he was only 8 years old. At the age of 9, he participated in the first Portuguese championship. He won the Brazilian Karting Cup and was National Vice-Champion in 2017, 2018 and 2019. At the age of 14, he moved to Italy to professionalise his training and make the leap to Formula 4. Last season, in 2024, already in FRECA (Formula Regional Europe by Alpine), he stood out as one of the best rookies (two podiums and best rookie in 3 races). In 2025, he made the jump to the FIA Formula 3 Championship, one of the main antechambers to Formula 1, to complete the full season with the prestigious Van Amersfoort Racing (VAR), thus becoming the first Portuguese in the category in 12 years. His role models are Ayrton Senna and Max Verstappen. In addition to cars, he is passionate about sports and animals.
